Answers to common newborn photography questions
Where does the newborn photoshoot take place?
Newborn sessions usually take place at home, but if you have a burning desire to be outside we can definitely work something out! I would recommend waiting until your little one is at least 3 months old for an outdoor session.
How do I book a newborn photography session with you?
Please send me a message via the contact me form on my website and we can work together to find a suitable date. If you are booking ahead of your little one arriving, we will pencil in a provisional date for the photoshoot that will be confirmed when your baby is here. A small non-refundable deposit is required to secure the session (cost varies depending on package) and the remaining balance will be due the day before the shoot.
When is the best time to have a newborn photoshoot?
Most people like to wait until after their 12 week scan to then book a provisional date around 2 weeks after the baby is due. This date is then confirmed once your baby has arrived. However, you are welcome to book a newborn photoshoot with me whenever you feel ready!
Can I have newborn photoshoot when my baby is a few weeks old?
It’s never too late to photograph your baby and get some beautiful pictures! Newborn photography sessions are often done around the 2 week old mark as they are still very sleepy and squished up, but this doesn’t mean your shoot has to be then. We can do a newborn photoshoot when you feel ready, the only difference will be some poses (like wrapped babies) won’t be safe to do past 6 weeks due to their bones being more formed.
How much does a newborn photoshoot cost?
I have different newborn options available to suit every budget; there are three different packages to pick from with my home newborn photography sessions.
What should we wear for our newborn photoshoot?
Something you feel comfortable in! Photos look best if everyone is co-ordinated and wearing minimal to no patterns. Plan to have a couple of different outfits for your baby to allow for any accidents. We will also take some of them in a nappy and wrapped in blankets. Luckily I have a handy style guide that is included with all packages to help you to plan what to wear ahead of your photoshoot. Layers are a good way to create different looks from one outfit, or you can bring a couple of options and change during the shoot.
How do we prepare for the newborn photography session?
Gather up any special blankets, muslins, comforters etc that baby has as these work well with creating different looks for the photos. If they have a dummy make sure you have one of these to hand too. It's also a good idea to turn the heating up so the house is nice and warm for your little one. Plan to feed them just before the session is due to start and that way they should have a nice full tummy and be sleepy.
Do I need to tidy or clean my house for the newborn photography session?
Absolutely not! I am coming to take photos of you in your lovely newborn bubble. I don't care if the house is clean or not, and we only need a couple of well lit spots to create some beautiful photos. If there are any items in the way I will move them to take the photo and then put them back.
Do you take any traditional posed photographs?
My style is natural and candid, so I usually try to avoid photos that are too posed. If there are specific shots you would like let me know and we can aim to include them.
What happens if it is raining or cloudy on the day of the newborn photoshoot?
I keep a close eye on the weather leading up to an outdoor shoot, and if rain is planned a couple of days before then I will contact you to discuss rescheduling. If the day is overcast we will still go ahead with the session as this can create beautifully soft light as well as interesting textures in the sky.
Do you photograph in colour or black and white?
I shoot all my images in RAW format, then edit them in colour or black and white based on the look of each individual shot. I edit the colour profile based on what I think will work best for each individual image. If you have a colour image that you would like in black and white I will edit them for you on request.
How do I view the photos after the session?
You'll recieve some sneak peaks within 48 hours so you get a quick snapshot of the highlights. Within 3 weeks of the shoot you will receive an email eith your private gallery where you can view and select your images. Add-ons can be purchased to include additional images, prints or albums.
Do you have insurance for your family photography business?
Yes, I have both public liability and professional indemnity insurance for the business. I am happy to provide the details of this upon request. Please use my Contact Form to submit this.
Can we include pets in our newborn photoshoot?
Absolutely! We have a labradoodle called Ted and he is like our third baby so I understand how important family pets are. I would be thrilled to include any of your pets in the photos.
